Light Fight Brings Police to 'Occupy Dallas' Site

DALLAS - A disagreement over lights used for FOX 4's early morning live shots and some Occupy Dallas protesters ended when police stepped in before dawn Wednesday.
VIDEO: See the raw video of the confrontation, and also what made the air at 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
At least one of the protesters was upset because FOX 4 reporter Krystle Gutierrez and her camera crew were setting up across the street from the City Hall plaza where protesters were sleeping in tents. Gutierrez's first live shot was at 5 a.m.
Gutierrez was reporting on a protester's sex assault arrest on Tuesday , and Dallas police's subsequent investigation of children's safety there.

DPD: Man Guilty of One Sexual Assault Responsible For Another at Occupy Dallas Site

One week ago we got Occupy Dallas's side of the story concerning the sexual assault that took place at its encampment behind Dallas City Hall. Today, we get the official version from the Dallas Police Department, which is reporting that it has arrested Richard Wayne Armstrong, a 24-year-old "non-compliant registered sex offender," for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in late October.

According to DPD, which issued its statement via Facebook in advance of a 4 p.m. press conference, the victim was a runaway from her home in Garland; she was picked up at the camp last week and taken to DPD headquarters after they received a tip that she matched the description of the runaway. She was interviewed by Youth Section detectives, and told them that she had sex with the man in a tent at the encampment; she also said she told the man she was 19. Armstrong was identified as the suspect after an investigation by the Child Exploitation Squad.

Mayor "Troubled" By Assault at Occupy Dallas Site, But Not Ready to Boot Group Off City Land in Dallas Observer

Mayor Mike Rawlings called moments ago to discuss DPD's announcement that it has in custody a 24-year-old registered sex offender who police say assaulted a 14-year-old girl at the Occupy Dallas encampment behind City Hall. City Hall has already issued an official statement concerning the investigation, but Rawlings wanted to make it very clear: He's not ready to rip up the city's agreement with Occupy Dallas that allows them to stay there, but he's also going to make sure the city keeps a closer eye on the doings in the parking lot behind City Hall.

"What's most important to me is public safety, whether inside or outside the camp," he said. "This is a concerning incident, a concerning act. I asked the police: Is this an isolated incident, or do we have a trend here that will endanger the public's safety? At this point they say this is isolated, but trust me, there will be closer surveillance to make sure it's not a trend. And if it is, we're going to have a very different conversation."
