Hey, Tea Party people and libertarians. Does it bother you at all that the Dallas police Saturday arrested seven people for "improper use of a sidewalk?" Does it occur to you that if bullshit charges like those can stick even for a minute, it means you can't walk down the street in Dallas unless the cops tell you that you can? (Five were released at 1:30 this morning.)
I'm not talking about the Occupy Dallas protester who got into a tussle with police over a flag. Some people say the YouTube video of the incident in front of Bank of America Plaza Saturday proves the cops provoked a melee. I don't know what it proves.
I know you can't fight with the cops. There is always a gun involved. The cop's gun. Too often when somebody fights with a cop, it occurs to him or her to go for the cop's gun. You can't fight with cops. You have to stop, back up, shut up, give up, get away from it. You can't fight with cops.
But you can damn well walk down the street if you want to. You can cheer and carry signs. How do you think we got free from England? This is still America, right?

Press Release: Five OccupyDallas protesters released from jail
Dallas, TX, November 7, 2011 — After being held for 36 hours on the charge of 'improper use of a sidewalk,' five OccupyDallas protesters were released from Lew Sterrett jail a little after 1:30 a.m. Monday morning.
The group submitted the paperwork required to post bail before 10 a.m.
Sunday morning and was surprised that protesters weren't released for another 15 hours. "They should not have spent 36 hours in jail for jaywalking," says Cordell Cameron, a member of the Media work group.
One of the protesters who remains locked up is being held on a felony charge of assaulting an officer. He is the protester who was allegedly shoved to the ground by off-duty officer Jay Hollis. Several videos of this event and other police actions which followed as a result have been posted on the OccupyDallas Facebook page. The group has published an open letter to Lt. Williams on their website urging him to drop all charges.
City to probe Occupy Dallas confrontation at bank WFAA [video]
DALLAS — The City of Dallas is launching an investigation into Saturday's Occupy Dallas protest that ended with arrests.
In a brief written statement to News 8, city spokesman Frank Librio said Dallas police "will review whatever video is available next week as part of an overall review of the incident."
Several videos shot by protesters show confrontations between officers and activists as the group marched outside downtown banks Saturday in support of Bank Transfer Day.

North Texans Take Part In Bank Transfer Day Occupy Dallas Protesters March, 8 Arrested CWTV [video]
It started as a Facebook phenomenon and on Saturday, North Texans took part in Bank Transfer Day. While some people did transfer their accounts, what happened with Occupy Dallas protesters also made headlines, as eight protesters were arrested.
Neighborhood Credit Union in Dallas extended their hours Saturday so people could switch from big for-profit banks to the non-profit credit union.
“I heard a lot on the news about people moving and I just decided to do some research. So I went online and looked up the credit unions, see which ones were involved in the communities,” said Bobby Frank, who ended up at Neighborhood Credit Union. “I was just afraid that the banks were going to go up on the fees, so I decided just to move our business account to a credit union.”
The organizer of Bank Transfer Day was Kristen Christian, and she said Frank and others were making the move to credit unions for all the right reasons.
“Big banks for far too long have mismanaged funds and utilized unethical business practices, so it’s time that we vote with our dollar and help restore our own local communities,” she said.
